The function of the piston seal is to ensure that pressurized fluid or other media does not by-pass the piston as the system pressure pushes the piston down the cylinder during a pressure cycle. American High Performance Seals manufactures a comprehensive range of piston seal designs, including lip seals, PTFE cap seals, compact-squeeze type seals and application–specific designed seals made from high-performance elastomers and engineered plastic materials to offer maximum durability and sealing performance.
Piston seals maintain sealing contact between the piston and the cylinder bore. Differential pressures acting on the piston to extend or retract the piston rod can be in excess of 400 bar (5 800 psi). The pressure acting on the piston seal increases contact forces between the piston seal and cylinder surface.
Piston Seals or Piston Rings are used in hydraulic cylinders for fluid sealing. They are internal to the cylinder head and seal against the cylinder bore, preventing fluid from flowing across the cylinder head. This allows pressure build up on one side of the piston, making the cylinder extend or retract.
